Why "Mountain View" Therapy? I was polling my family with different options and my brother gave the perfect summary of the theme and values I was trying to encapsulate with my name (not a simple task). He said, "It makes me think of process, hard work, achievement...and Lord of the Rings."
Process- Heidegger speaks of Aletheia, an
unconcealing process of dis-covering truth, "the coming into being of something, the process is also importantly part of the Truth...the choice and the chooser". The hard reality, especially when we are in the midst of pain, confusion, grief or uncertainty, is that change comes one step at a time. Often we think in terms of linear progress, but life is more like meandering, rucking, or falling off a cliff.
"Living is the essence of life".

Hard Work- We are anti-fragile. Only by facing challenges

and struggles do we gain access to the strength and tools necessary to expand our capabilities. This does not mean we need to "go it alone", learning to reach out, accept support, shift our focus or create different expectations is all part of the courageous "work" that leads to positive outcomes in therapy.
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light" -Dylan Thomas
Achievement- This word means something different for every client I work with, no one journey looks the same. A large part of the therapeutic process is identifying unused opportunities and expanding mindsets to recognize and celebrate unrecognized success. Adopting a Growth Mindset, and creating SMART goals to author a vision for the future often relieves anxiety due to one's inability to predict outcomes. An investigation into one's Core beliefs or Exiled Parts can bring new understanding, insight and healing to how our past is impacting our present. I believe in active therapy, I understand clients do not just want passive support to feel better about the situation they're in. They want growth and change, and sometimes they want to reclaim what has been lost. This is a Process, that takes Hard Work, but I am committed to exploring, discovering and supporting what my clients want to achieve.
“Mountains, according to the angle of view, the season, the time of day, the beholder's frame of mind, or any one thing, can effectively change their appearance. Thus, it is essential to recognize that we can never know more than one side, one small aspect of a mountain.”
― Haruki Murakami,
Lord of The Rings- We have evolved to think and understand the world through stories. Stories that are told to us and stories we tell ourselves. It's how we relate to our parts and each other. In fact, we experience things in terms of how they relate to our story before our brain labels them as objects. As Iain McGilchrist has said, "We create the world by attending to it in a particular way". Lord of The Rings is a moving narrative about self-discovery through adventure. It is a grand epic but its substance is found at the individual level, in the complexity of each character's life as it is woven into the grand design.
"The mountains are calling, and I must go"
- John Muir
